Vimalamitra (Dri-med-bshes-gnyen)
§1. gNubs-chen mentions (bSam gtan mig sgron, p. 9): bi
ma la’i klong ’grel. Cf. p. 456. An early reference to the
name Vimalamitra and a commentary attributed to him. Perhaps the
commentary mentioned in Martin 2001: 37? Cf. Karmay 2007: 97, n. 69.
§2. Rong-zom-pa, in his commentary on the *Guhyagarbhatantra, also
alludes to a certain work called the ’Chi kha ma’i man ngag by
Ācārya Vimalamitra. See the dKon mchog ’grel (p. 195).
According to him the work deals with utpattikrama, utpannakrama,
and rDzogs-chen (i.e. bskyed rdzogs rnam pa gsum) practices based
on energy-winds (dbugs) and energy-channels (rtsa), that is,
dealing with the so-called thabs lam practices.
§3. Also see Almogi 2009: 248 (“The Materiality and Immanence of
Gnosis in Some rNying-ma Tantric Sources”). At least three works attributed
to Vimalamitra have been used there: gSang thig(s) and
its commentary and Prajñāpraveśa.
§4. Of course, for more information, see Martin 2011 (i.e.
Tibskrit): s.v. Vimalamitra (Dri med bshes gnyen, Bi ma la mi
tra).
§5. gNubs-chen, bSam gtan mig sgron (pp. 277).
§6. Usually in Tibetan sources, Śāntarakṣita is said to have foretold
philosophical dissensus in Tibet and recommended to invite Kamalaśīla to
resolve it. There is no mention of he having recommended to invite Vimalamitra.
According to the bKa’ thang sde lnga (p. 450), however, Śāntarakṣita recommended that Kamalaśīla and Vimalamitra be
invited to Tibet.
§7. One Vimalamitra is listed in the list of paṇḍitas in the bKa’ thang sde lnga (p. 402). See also ibid. (pp. 120, 125–126, 128, 129, 482).
§8. Nyang-ral (revealed), gSang sngags lung gi bang mdzod (p. 113): Vimalamitra!
