There are two explanations of the name A-mdo. The first one offered by dGe-chos is that it is a result of stressing on the prescript (sngon ’jug) m in mDo, so that one hears Am-do (dGe.chos-3: 216). This position is also mentioned in the Bod.rgya (s.v.). According to the second explanation the region came to be called A-mdo after A-chen-gangs-rgyab and mDo-la came to be united.
