mtha’ dag (pa):

One may perhaps assume dag in mtha’ dag (meaning “all”) to be a plural marker but according to dGe-’dun-chos-’phel, dag pa is interpreted to be “purified of” (in the sense of “free of”) and hence mtha’ dag for him etymologically means “made into limitless or pure.” See the dGe chos gsung ’bum (vol. 5, p. 73): mtha’ med pa’am gtsang bar byas pa’i don no ||. Or, perhaps “pure (i.e. free) of end or limit” and hence “entire.”
