It is perhaps universally known but still it may be mentioned (with a source) that the earliest Tibetan translator is said to be Thon-mi Saṃbhoṭa. See the Nyang ral chos ’byung (p. 174.12): bod kyi lo tsā ba la snga ba de thon ni sam saṃ bho ṭa yin no ||.
